course, that’s assuming they’re installed on a dry, level subfloor. Many of the problems that a hardwood floor may develop over the years can be traced back to the quality of the subfloor beneath. The first step is to check the level of the subfloor. Typically, ¼” is the maximum tolerance for flatness variation in the subfloor. Start at one side of the room and use a level to measure the inclination of the subfloor in five foot increments. Often, especially in older homes, it will be necessary to apply a floor prep filler to level uneven surfaces. Using a flexible underlayment layer between the subfloor and flooring hardwood can accommodate for some of the minimal variations. Also, keep an eye out for evidence of moisture in uneven areas. Any pooling moisture could spell disaster down the road.

Supposing the subfloor is acceptably flat, and there are no obvious signs of moisture, now’s the perfect time to check for squeaks and creaks. Often, the new hardwood flooring material will develop creaks and squeaks as it expands over time, but unless you take care of subfloor squeaks before installing the surface layer, they’ll be no way to get rid of the annoying noise down the road. Start at one end of the room and slowly work around the room from the walls inward. If you discover squeaks, use 2”-3” coarse wood screws to re-fasten the subfloor panel to the nearest floor joist. It may take several screws, but this simple step could save a lifetime of annoying creaks.

After fixing the subfloor squeaks, you may need to check the level of the repaired area, and repeat step one as necessary. Check again for moisture, grab your hammer, and get ready to begin the real work! The method is simple: Smash, Scrape, and Seal. You’ll need a hammer, a small chisel, a flat bar (a nail bar will do), a cotton rag, and a replacement tile, tile set, and grout. If the tile is cracked, the only way to remove it entirely is to crack it into pieces and chip the pieces out. To begin, fold the cotton rag into a small square, and place it over the tile face, near the existing crack. Grab the hammer and hit the rag to shatter the tile into removable pieces. Remember to wear safety glasses! The cotton rag will prevent the chips from flying and help protect neighboring tiles. Usually, a few large chunks will become detached during this initial step. If the tile is stubborn, use a drill with a masonry bit to drill a series of small holes, then tap the chisel between them. You can also use the chisel along the grouted edge to break the seal. Once the larger chunks of tile have been removed, use the flat bar to pry up any remaining pieces. Throughout the breaking process, use caution not to damage any of the surrounding tiles.

Continue scraping until all of the tile particles are removed. At this point, it’s helpful to vacuum the hole area to remove any particulate debris. Once the area is clear, apply a ¼” thick layer of tile set using a notched trowel. Remember not to apply too much since there won’t be anywhere for it to expand. Insert the replacement tile into the tile set and press until it is flush with the rest of the floor. Often, tapping the new tile with a rubber mallet can be helpful with this step. After you’ve allowed the tile to set for 24-48hrs, apply grout into the joints, sponge off the excess, allow the setting to dry, and you’re finished.

Unlike some more complicated flooring repairs, replacing a cracked tile is a task nearly any homeowner can accomplish by themselves. Of course, when in doubt, call a licensed contractor.
